I have a spare USB 3.0 external hard drive. Could it be used to install games and then play them because I don't really have much internal storage space. Would it mean slower loading times? Or would it be faster than SATA 2.0 hard drive?
External drives are often slower than internal drives, but you can certainly use them for games. I'd seriously consider buying an additional internal drive, and using the external for backup purposes.
