Do you know of any external hard drives with a shock protection mechanism that senses when the HDD has dropped and stops the disks to prevent damage (like the Active Shock Protection on Lenovo notebooks)? I see a lot of HDDs that claim to have "shock protection," but I think that most of them just build up big enclosures that are meant to spread out the impact. I don't think any of these would work after a fall that occurred while the disks were spinning. Any word on Passive vs. Active shock protection systems in external hard drives?

Actually, the wording should read shock-resistant, or something similar implying that the protection isn't absolute, because it isn't. The general rule I follow is that no matter the kind of external hard drive I buy, I try to keep away from any sort of shaking or impact :)
