I moved (not copy) some files from external drive A to external drive B
when I moved house drive B was lost
can I retrieve the files from drive A or are they lost

Recovery software can often do it. Try http://www.piriform.com/recuva The less the original drive has been used the better. Moving or even deleting a file does not actually remove the bits from the drive but when they get overwritten by new bits they are usually gone, so it depends on how much writing has been done.
