external harddrive gone bad

Hi All

My External Toshiba 1TB Hard Drive is damaged and now computer detects the drive but when i am trying to access it it shows message this drive needs to be formatting before us.

but i don't want to format it as i have important data on it.
can anybody tell me please option for data recovery from damaged drive.

You can run Disk Check on the drive: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
In case the issue persists, you may need to use some partition recovery program as the drive may have lost its partitions(I can't really recommend you a specific one). You can check whether this is the case in Disk Management.

In most cases, drives lose their partitions after unsafe ejection.
After that, it will not hurt to test the drive with some HDD testing tool: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility
