External Hardrive goes blank unless you unplug and replug

I recently purchased a 1TB Seagate external hard drive and it works perfectly. The only problem is when the computer goes to sleep, or is simply on for a long period of time that the hard drive acts up. In my computer it still recognizes the device and you can access the folders, but they are empty. The only way to see and access the files again is to unplug and re-plug the hard drive from the power board - which I know is not good for it. Any ideas of what may be wrong and what I can do to fix it?

It is not normal and points to something being wrong with the drive, claim warranty on the drive is what I would do.
