External hardrive with obsolete ports

Hi, I have a G drive external hardrive but the firewire 800 ports don't work with my new imac. Is there a way to change the enclosure so it takes usb3 or thunderbolt and thereby speeding up my transfer rate? Or are these ports hard wired on to the hard drive and I would need to get another one. Thanks for your help in advance

You can crack open the enclosure and see. For that model it is highly unlikely there is a custom board on the drive.
