External HD Formatting

Hey guys,

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I got a Toshiba Canvio 3TB external HD new only about 8 months ago, there is only I think about 2TB of data used up on it which is movies only. Just the other day it would not turn on, the usb would not work ad there was no sound coming from it what so ever. I figured it was the HD case that was faulty so I purchased a 3.5 Sata enclosure which fits fine. However when I go to use the HD it asks me to now format the disk, I don't want to loose the data on it but I attempted an online guide to fix this error and I cant even click on the HD in my computer because it is not active. Any ideas on this would be really helpful.

Hey bazzzman0. Would you please open Disk Management and post a screenshot of what you see there about the drive and partition? Here's how to open it: How to access Disk Management in Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8 to manage hard drives.
You could try accessing the drive via Linux Live USB/CD to see if you're able to retrieve your data this way. And if that doesn't help, you could try some of the data recovery options, listed in this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
