I have a fairly old WD Passport external hd, and usually it takes a while to boot up in file explorer, but this time the booting up caused file explorer to not respond, and crash. After the incident, the external hd does not show up on file explorer or disc manager. I have already tried swapping usb cables, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions please?

Solution
Do you feel the drive spinning when its powered up?
Is it making any unusual noise such as repeated clicking?

The drive must be able to read the system area of the platters before it typically presents itself to the OS but with an external drive, you have the USB to Sata bridge in between which could also be having an issue.
