I have a weird problem with my External HDD.(WD My Book 640)

Whenever I connect a USB Flash drive or any storage device, my External Hdd becomes Unusable. All folders show empty. Even if it shows files, those files are not usable in any way.
This happened when I connected my Mobile phone as well.
Usually I remove and reconnect my Hdd to make it work.

Once I reconnected the Hdd while the flash drive was connected & a window popped up mentioning that windows will have to format this drive in order to use it. I removed the flash drive & reconnected the Hdd and it worked as if nothing as happened.

Also note, that my anti-virus software(Nod32) crashed during the above incident. Usually there's a pop-up to scan the connected drive. The error probably caused it to crash, I'm just letting you guys know.

I have absolutely no idea whats going on.
Any help? :)

very odd indeed. Is this re-peatable with other computers and this drive, or other hard drives in this computer?

Going to have to have to narrow down this thing, otherwise we are just reaching in the dark here.
