Win 10 machine. Bought a 2 TB Western Digital SATA drive (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08VH8R94B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and a UGREEN SATA hard drive enclosure (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076WQHK2G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

The external enclosure does show up, but not the drive itself: Disk Management shows “Disk 1, Removable G: No Media.” This disappears when I turn off power to the enclosure. When I go to a command prompt and try to either format the G drive or chkdsk I get “Cannot open volume for direct access.“

Enclosure is getting power - at least the power button lights up. Have tried re-seating the drive in the enclosure multiple times. Enclosure and drive to seem to mate on the seven data pins and 15 power pins, though nothing on the enclosure mates with the 8 (4 over 4) pins that are part of the drive and which I would have thought were for power.

Is the drive not getting power? Just defective? Or am I missing something obvious or getting incompatible hardware?

Grateful for any guidance here…

It sounds like it's all getting power since Windows is detecting the enclosure but it's not allowing you to access it.
When you first turn on the enclosure, do you hear the arm or heads spin up on the drive while it's in the enclosure? Can you feel a vibration from it when its on and in the enclosure?

EDIT #1: The 4x4 isn't actually a power connector. Those are jumper pins but they aren't used.

Thanks so much for responding. No sound at all from the drive, even when I take the lid off the enclosure and put my ear right up against it while turning it on. None of the normal HD whirring sounds or vibrations. So, I guess either a bad disk or some flaw in the enclosure itself getting power to the SATA cable?

And, thanks on the jumpers vs external power distinction – had completely forgotten they were a thing.

USB being 5 volts = = = > Enclosure

SATA HDD being likely needing 5 and 12 volts.

Double check the power requirements and provided power connections.
Thanks for responding. Enclosure isn’t solely powered off USB – there’s a separate power cable outputting 12v DC to a barrel connector into the unit. Power light is on even if I unplug the USB so I do think it’s getting power off the regular 110AC plug.

Can you retrieve the SMART data with CrystalDiskInfo?
Thanks for responding. Downloaded and installed CrystalDiskInfo, but it doesn’t give me an option for the G drive under the “disk” drop-down menu, only the C/D internal drive for which the app does provide SMART data.

For kicks and giggles,
Are you able to install the drive internally into your PC and see if you get the same issues?
It would be a quick way to test the enclosure to see if it could be the source of the problem.
