Question External HDD failed to open, I was told that a 2TB Seagate PhotoDrive 2 would work to save my data ?

Greetings Ya'll,

My WD Passport, P/N WDBYoo10BBL-OB, will not open any further than accepting My Password, & allowing me to go to WD Discovery. It will not bring up the window that either schedules Data Recovery, &/or allows it to be done Manually.

Out of desperation, while at Walmart, a Customer Rep told me that the "Seagate Photo Drive" 2TB, PN# 2XBAP1-571 could be used to store the Data that I want to keep. And, on the back of the box, it states "Use this hard drive to store & organize your files too."

Once I got home, & found that the Instructions gave very little details, about anything, so I went to the Sea gate Web Site, & learned that unlike the HVAC Equipment that I work on,... Plugging in the Name & Model# & seeking the installation instructions, at the Seagate Site, only gave me a list of more than 100 links, of which, I saw nothing that I thought would me.

I tried to find a Tech Service Ph#, & only found some kind of "Chat for English" that refused to load properly. I then tried the "Service Center", where Sea gate states , "you can get service and support for your Seagate product":

DSV

19901 Western Avenue, Torrance,
California, 90501

Operating Hours: 8:00 - 17:00 (Mon - Fri)

I then had to search for a Contact" Ph#/Email, etc., on Th' Net, & called the business at the listed address, which is some kind of "Shipping Company", & the receptionist told me that was true, & that they "Shipped Products for Sea Gate" WTH?!? The receptionist then gave me a PH# xxx, & she told me that was the Right One. I called that #, & none of the "Prompts" were for what I needed, so I clicked on one, & explained my situation to the Tech. The Tech told me that I had to go to the Sea Gate Support Page, & use the chat. I then re-explained to him how it was not working, & he did volunteer, to tell me what to do at that page, but nothing helped, & Yes,..... My Pop Up Blocker was disengaged, as well as my other Applications, such as Malwarebytes, etc.

The Tech then told me that I'd have to go back & try later!

That "Act", now causes me even more concern, than just whether I have the correct External Drive, for so far,..... "Sea Gate Support" is either very confusing, or Flat Out Sucks.

I've searched the Internet over the past three days, & I've seen where Sea Gate, if I'm understanding correctly, had shut down it's "Support Forum", & that it had No Tech Service Ph.#, at least one that could help with this drive. And, I saw many "Pros" & "Cons" regarding Sea Gate Products, but I Know that will happen with any product.

With all of that said,...... I saw "Tom's Hardware" as I was Searching th' Net for answers, & hoped that by joining this Group, that at least My Questions about the proper usage of this Drive, as well as other Future Matters will be answered.

So,........ Should I/Can I, use this Sea Gate Photo Drive to store My System Data, Files & Folders etc., or,...... Should I go back to Walmart, get a refund, & then go in to the city to Best Buy, or Computer World, & get a "Proper Drive"?

umm.....Please don't take tech advise from the 'rep' at Walmart.

If your original drive, the WD Passport, won't allow access to the files within, the Seagate thing is of no help.
Greetings USAFRet,

Yeah,..... I feel pathetically stupid about that.

I'm not su8re what You mean "
"the Seagate thing is of no help.". Are You saying that No Drive, will Save My Data on My PC, since I can not get the WD Drive to operate properly?

USA, the WD Drive is external & connects to my PC via a USB.

If the external WD Passport with all your data on it is not accessible, another drive won't help.
The Data on My PC, was "Copied to", not "Transferred to", the WD Drive., for backup.

That Data still exists on My PC, & it has not been affected by the WD Drive not fully opening up.

But,.... My now not being able to back up my Data, is what brought this discussion about.

Can that Sea Gate "Photo Drive" be used in the same fashion as the WD Passport?

OK, then yes.

ANY external drive could be used for that purpose.

Be wary of whatever built in software is included for 'backups'.
Just copy the desired data yourself.

"ANY external drive could be used for that purpose."

Even though the main purpose for the Drive, as Advertised is for "Photos", with the brief statement about "storing & organizing files" on the back of the box?

"Be wary of whatever built in software is included for 'backups'."

Why, & How so? ... You'll have to forgive me USA, I'm not very literate when it comes to Computers, & matters like this.

Yes, ANY external drive.
There is nothing special about "photos".

Why avoid that software?
Often it is very proprietary. If the enclosure were to die, you often can't just remove the drive and recover the data, without the original enclosure.

Interesting.

If, & I have,.... were to install a "Universal Refrigeration Controller",... I would have to follow the instructions "to the letter" so as to meet the Original Manufacturer's specifications, such as BOHN, or YORK. In those "Controllers", there are many "Unrequired Options", such as hooking the unit up for Wireless, or Hard Wire monitoring., Various Alarms for Temp Rise/Fall, etc. Again, those are "options", & Not Required. But, I can not intermingle the operation instructions between various Manufacturers, without an extensive amount of work, & often a great deal of stress.

What "built in software" should I Avoid USA?

And, I want to Thank You for Your Help on this!

A lot of these drives have software included, for "backups".
The problem is...how they do that.

That Seagate you mention above is aimed at photos only.

So the built in software would seem to be aimed only at the default Windows Library for "Photos".
In reality, you want to be backing up much more than that.
