Question External HDD files showing up in Gibberish

So my toshiba external hdd 2TB had files of about 100gb or something. Around an year ago I tried connecting it to an Android phone when I don't know what happened but the hard drive got corrupted or something now all the files are in gibberish and after searching help for the whole time I found nothing useful and have some important data that is not backed up anywhere else. Please help as much as possible.

Can you remember excactly how? Did you use any adapters. Any error messages ?

Then it boils down to - how important are those data for you, e.g. how much are you willing to pay? I'd ask because I think having a professional recovery company is the only reasonable solution for you.
