External Headset not working on laptop

Hi,

I have the Clevo W355SS (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Clevo-W355SS-Schenker-XMG-A504-Barebones-Notebook.113909.0.html) laptop. It does not seem to work with an external headset. The sound is a bit off -- I don't know how to quite describe it. It just doesn't sound the same. The microphone won't work at all.

Any insight is appreciated, into getting this fixed.

MNight it be in THX 5.1 or 7.1 and have the headphone jack acting as Front speakers instead of headphones?
That would account for the 'not quite right' audio I think.
