External Keyboards

Hello,
I am trying to connect a usb keyboard to my laptop as it has a numeric keyboard. I have looked at devicesand cant find a menu to make it a default keyboard. I have also removed the keyboard from the laptop (which left me with no keyboad ops on either boards. Anyone have a thought - mm new computer?

what do you mean by making it the default keyboard?

just plug it in, and type. what are you trying to do with it?
