External monitor icons open on primary laptop screen

I have connected an external monitor to my laptop. My laptop is the primary. I have extended screen chosen. I can move icons to external monitor but they will not open there. They open but on my laptop, not on my external monitor. Why?
Im using windows 8 and have no idea what my system specs are. Thanks.

Hi, mine does the same thing, but you can drag the application on the external monitor.

Thank you! I had a feeling it was simple but I'm just not that computer savvy. I did ask several people that are and none of them even suggested this.
