We are looking to add an external monitor to an HP OMEN 17t-ck000 Laptop, but after doing all the research, I don't know where to start anymore. Laptop specs are:

  • CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-11800H (up to 4.6 GHz, 24 MB L3 cache, 8 cores, 16 threads)
  • GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3070 (140 W) Laptop GPU (8 GB)
  • RAM 16 GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
  • Display: 17.3" diagonal, QHD (2560 x 1440), 165 Hz, 3 ms response time, IPS, micro-edge, anti-glare, Low Blue Light, 300 nits with 16:9 AR

What makes it partly confusing is that when I look at the display settings, it shows 1920 x 1080 recommended. So do i stick with a 1080 monitor, or upgrade to a nice 1440? We don't do any real hard-core gaming on it, and im not even sure which resolution I should be looking at primarily. Thank you.

It's a free choice really. If you're happy with 1080p, then stick with that and maybe get a larger screen. That said, 1440 monitors aren't that expensive.

The Dell S2721HGF can be had for under $200 - good 1080p choice, and cheapest you can find without buying junk.
Tomshardware heaps praise on the S3222DGM; It's around $250-350 depending on sales - https://www.tomshardware.com/news/t...monitor-is-so-epic-i-told-my-family-to-buy-it
Good 32" choice. There are better but they cost more and usually are gaming oriented.

You may want to look into IPS panels. VA has better contrast, IPS looks better when viewed from an angle.
Also consider backlight bleed and light reflection. They can make or break a monitor when it comes to looking at it in darkness or a brightly lit room.

Have a look around https://www.rtings.com/monitor and see if their tests and comparisons help you decide.

If you find a few you're interested in, ask for recommendations here. It's always good to get advice on a screen because you'll be looking at it a lot.
