Question External NVME SSD on Android

I am not able to use my Z Fold 4 with ssd nvme enclosure.
I tried some enclosures with nvme SSD inside (Kingston and Adata) but no success.
The SSDs are formated as exfat and working perfectly in windows.
When I connected the rack to Z fold 4 it gets recognized by the phone but when transferring something to the ssd, suddenly disconnects.
I restarted the phone but same thing happens all the time.

Am I doing something wrong?

Android is GNU/Linux based and thus, uses different file system. And while many newer devices do support ExFat, not all of them do. Naitive support is for Ext4 and Ext3. FAT32 should also work.

So, try with different file system.

Another issue is, that smart phones aren't designed to power external drives, like PCs can. So, when you try your transfer, drive needs more power and since your phone most likely can't deliver it, connection drops.

Thank you for advice.
The thing is that using many external SSDs with Z Fold4 (one of the newest model which definitely supports exFAT) is without issue and the phone can supply all the power needed for operation. Probably those enclosures are SATA type.

The problem comes with NVME enclosures with exFAT formatted SSD inside. Is there a higher power needed by that enclosure?

You might be better off letting the phone itself format the ssd to ensure compatibility. Despite what the phone's specs may say about compatibility they can be quirky and particular about external drives. So if the phone does the formatting then you're assured compatibility.

I did that also, but no success. Z Fold 4 is capable of 4,5W wireless reverse charging, therefore I doubt it cannot power an external rack,

M.2 NVMe SSD can consume more power than what your phone is capable of.

For example; Samsung 970 Evo Plus (my OS drive), needs 3.4W during read and 6W during write, while can consume up to 7.8W,

Since you didn't tell us what M.2 NVMe drives you're exactly using, i can't look up their power consumption. They should hover around 6W as well, during write + enclosure as well, which also draws some power.

I think you are right. However, I had an external 2Tb Sandisk SSD and I used without issues even when writing 10Gb on it. Same phone.
Probably it was a SATA disk.

In case if anyone is still looking for a solution, I have a 500GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe in a Sabrent USB 3.2 enclosure.

I can access it on my S24U through an externally powered USB hub: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CG1RYLB7

But I also need a USB C female to USB A male adaptor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPBD6XY8 to connect it to a USB C OTG cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B5MPCJF5

The phone is also charged directly from the USB hub, and the additional power cable of the OTGH cable is not needed.
