Extreme OC question

I was thinking of getting a 3.0 or a 3.2 and Ocing them untill they hit 1066fsb. Now where looking at 4.0 and 4.26ghz here. I would like to do this on a nice watercooling system to run it, that is, if water will keep it cool enough. Im not sure on the right motherboard that will let me get to 1066fps easy and if the E actually OC's better than the C. Any ideas?

Does for my 3.0 just make sure you start at some good DDR500+, unless you dont care if they sync then by all means.

YOu <b>MIGHT</b> be able to do it with watercooling. I know that for tom's to get over 4ghz they were forced to use a compressor cooling system. But to do this your going to need really fast ram. for what your asking you would probably need pc4200 ram if you could find it. But i'm sure you could probably get away with pc4000 and o/c it to around 266 with good cooling on it. I'm not sure what kind of timings they have for ram like that, all i know is it will cost a shitload to do this.

What you're going to NEED in order to even have a chance of hitting those clocks is a 3.0GHz Northwood w/ 30 capacitors on the back (vs. the more common 12). Then you'll need some EXCELLENT PC4000 (Ballistix should do it on okay clocks...SOME [few, though] Crucial PC3200XL sticks can reach 280MHz) or some very good PC4200. Then you'll need either an $500 dollar H20 system (and a LOT of luck) or a $700 phase-change cooler (and some luck).

impressive indeed. I'm impressed with the timings the most. From there tests you can tell the a64s don't overclock anywhere near as well. Hopefully with 90nm processing we'll be able to see these a64s become as good at o/cing as their little brother.

I already knew I would need to ram to do it. It sounds possible and 4ghz looks nice to boot. That ram looks damn impressive! I would probably sabe a bundle on that alone, if I get a lucky pair I guess. Shooting for 4ghz just may be past the chips limit. 3.8 looks more viable in this case. I wonder how much a 600mhz over would affect the life of the proc and board(and possible the ram). More than likely I would be happy with OC results. The FSB at 250 would just be awsome. The 2.8 reaches 3.5 at 250, anyone clock theirs farther with good results?

4GHz is within the limits of a select few chips...3.8 is only within the limits of those very same chips (just to put in perspective how good those chips are). Those chips are EXCLUSIVELY the 30Cap 3.0GHz Northwoods!! As for longevity, as long as it runs stabily at those clocks with acceptable voltages (sub 1.675V), it should last for as long as you have the computer. Of course it might not (nobody really knows the lifetime of the 30Cap P4s), but instability leads to a shortened life. VERY high temps lead to a shorten life. VERY high voltages lead to a shortened life. Avoid those three things and you should be fine.

BTW, if and when you do get a 30Cap P4 (hopefully M0 stepping), if it doesn't hit ~3.55GHz on stock voltages, it's a bum chip...send it back.
