Exult SI Pikeman POW difficulty

I've just raided the hidden Goblin village and killed King Pomdingurgh
(or however it is spelt). There is a lone Pikeman prisoner due for the
pot that I have saved and he is following me back to Monitor. There
seems to be a problem though .... he won't go down wooden steps and
there are about 5 of these staircases on the way.
Is there a different way to go back to Monitor with the Pikeman that
doesn't involve steps? It says in the walkthrough that I have that the
Pikeman never makes it back and dies on the way. But its a bit
unAvatarlike to polish the bloke off when we get to a staircase and then
carry him back for the 100 Moniteri reward on missing Pikeman bodies.

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if this is an Exult feature or something in the original
game.

Another thing I've just found is that Goblins keep regenerating inside
the Fawn guard tower even after it is safely back in the hands of the
Pikeman. There is even a Pikeman asleep in one of the first floor beds
with goblins standing next to him.

It sounds like an Exult-specific issue to me.. not that it helps much
anyway since it seems to be impossible to save him in the original
too. Just give him a blow on the head when he's not looking and sell
his corpse to Renfry.

Its alright ... he died a natural death ... well a Goblin threw a spear
into his back. I was going to take him somewhere nice and give him a
slap up meal before I did what had to be done but he stopped long before
that and the passing Goblin saved me from getting my Avatar's hands
dirty.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think it is an Exult problem. Exult just
transfers the Avatar and his party to the bottom of these stairs but the
tag along Pikeman wasn't a member of the party.

With a deafening roar and a whoosh of spray, Bill Jillians swings about
and addresses the awaiting newsgroup...

He's supposed to drop dead as you approach the first stairs. But sometimes
he doesn't thanks to a bug of some sort.
