EZ Dock Data Retrieval

I was told I could use the Kingwin EZ Dock 2535 to pull data from a laptop that quit working. When I connect it to my desktop I get the message that the drive needs to be formatted. Does that mean the laptop hard drive is gone or am I screwing up the connection between the laptop hard drive and the desktop? Thanks!

Hey Bearly0506. Try connecting the drive directly to your mobo via a SATA connection to see if the same thing happens. Also, try accessing the drive via Linux Live CD/USB to see if it's recognized properly and if you can retrieve the data this way. This is basically a portable, bootable version of Linux, which can often help in cases like this.
