not until Windows boots, just press the power button and the
F-Lock key in quick order. Maybe somebody will build a kybd
with the default setting for std F-keys, when you want the
enhanced function, that can be set by Windows, is anyone at
MS listening?

The above works, but is not a totally satisfactory solution, as the author
explains. But, then there isn't a totally satisfactory solution, MS chose
to default that button to "off", so their "special" key labels are enabled
by default. And the button is not "addressable", so you can't change it
programatically, you must physically press it.

I find it a pain.

What I do is run a script at startup that pops up a dialog to remind
me to press F-Lock each time I log in. Here it is:

one-line script, place in a TXT file named FLOCKMSG.VBS:

MsgBox "Don't forget to turn on F Lock at startup!", 64, "Reminder"

then, in your start-menu's Startup folder (or All User's), place a
shortcut whose "target" setting is this:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscript.exe c:\flockmsg.vbs

[assumes c: drive, and script is in the root of c:; adjust accordingly.]

I'm puzzled. . .

I have a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard, bought a couple of months
ago. It's the first keyboard I've had with an F-lock, and in my
ignorance I just assumed it worked like Num-Lock -- that XP remembered
whether it was on or off at shutdown and restored it to the same state
at bootup. And that's what it seems to do.

Both LEDs come on as soon as the machine starts powering up, so I can
press F2 to get into my Bios, or F8 to get into startup options, etc. No
manual pressing of the key necessary. The keyboard comes with an adapter
and I usually use it in the PS/2 port, but I just tried it plugged into
a USB port and it works the same way.

Anyone else? Maybe someone at MS *has* listened; it can't be my computer
doing anything fancy, it's a veteran three-year-old Dell 4300.
