Well, changing the HDD to a different machine, if that machine isn't
*exactly* the same, has its own problems.

Putting that aside, it would appear that you have hardware problems on the
machine. Do you have any details from the error message(s)? Is it always the
same message, or does it vary? The most likely culprit is bad RAM,
mis-matched RAM or poorly seated RAM. Or, it might be the video. Or it might
be the motherboard, or any other bits of hardware. Pare the system down to
minimums: Pull ALL RAM, clean the contacts with a pencil eraser, and then
reseat one stick (if sufficient.) Connect the monitor, keyboard and moue,
and NOTHING else. Pull other cards, disable things like sound and LAN, etc.
(unneeded onboard devices, settings in BIOS). Try clean installing (not
reinstalling or over-installing) Windows again. If successful, slowly
proceed to add other hardware, one bit at a time. If installation fails,
then you need to: Swap RAM, or; Try a different video card (or add on if
video is currently onboard), or; Swap out keyboard and mouse.

In the end, the problem may be the motherboard. Chief suspect would be
leaking or swollen capacitors. Fairly common problem in mobos from a few
years ago. It might even be the hard drive, so be sure to get the disk
manufacturer's diagnostic tools to run from a floppy boot disk.
