factory reset windows 8.1; insert media

So I am trying to factory reset my PC and windows 8.1 is saying that I needed to insert media. So I had to download windows 8 and I burned it on a DVD -R and then when I inserted it, I have a new message saying that the media is not valid. Then I tried putting it on a DVD +R and that still didnt work. Any help?

You cannot use a downloaded disk to do a reset unless that is the same retail version that was used for the install. You may have an OEM version (if it came on the computer) and should have made a set of recovery disks when you got the machine. If not, you need to contact the computer maker.
