Hi,
I'm writing as I lost a ship to the privateers in a game, although I did
what I though right to prevent being robbed.

It is my duty to state that I'm playing after a 4 years stop, so maybe some
game rules could have been changed in the meantime.

I remember from some very old games that to prevent a cloaked privateer ship
from robbing you dry when you are orbiting a (own) planets is:

a) dump all the fuel except 1 kt (it will be robbed anyway, but who cares);
b) match your ship friendly code with your planet friendly code;
c) set the "beam up fuel" mission;

Even if the planet was captured by the privateers in the next turn, by
dropping colonists onto it, you can still be able to beam up the fuel by the
matching friendly code, and roast the robbing enemy ship that is now out of
cloak! 😉

As you can guess, something went amiss, and the netx turn I found myself
with the ship completely robbed, its "beam up fuel" reset to nothing, and I
subsequently lost the ship.

Where did I make wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Nothing went wrong as far as I can see.

According to the host order cargo drops (including Ground Combat) happen
before you tried to beam up fuel then the rob mission happened. So it looks
like you couldn't beam up fuel because the Privies took the planet over.

Privateers, my favorite race.

How much fuel did you beam up? You should have a message that your ship
beamed up something. If you have no message, you beamed 0 fuel. For what
reason, I don't know. Maybe someone else beamed it up too or maybe the FC on
the planet was changed.

If you did beam up fuel (happens after the rob mission), you would still
have your ship. The only other thing I can think of is that you should check
to make sure you are not inside a web minefield. If so, you lose another
25kt no matter what you do.

Cheers,

S

Not quite. Presumably the matched friendly codes should have still let
him beam up fuel... Unless the privateers had a ship with a lower id
also set to 'beam up fuel', IIRC beamup happens in order of ship id...

1. All but 1kt of fuel gets transfrered to planet (client side)
2. His ship gets robbed
3. Planet gets taken over by privs (clan drop)
4. Friendly codes (his ship and the planet) are still matched
5. Low ID Priv ship beams up fuel (no FC needed, they own the planet)
6. His ship tries to beam up fuel (via matching FCs)

So at point '5' if the Privs beam up all the fuel, none would be left
for him to beam up at point '6' to prevent tow-capturing... :-(

Pesky Privateers...

Oops missed that about the FC. You are right 🙂

I think this is the correct response. Orbiting the planet there was another
ship (a cargo) which I considered harmless... it had a very low ID, and I
checked its mass the turn before and after robbing happened.

It has increased by an amount, subracted the colonist dropping, which is
very near to the amount of the fuel that was left on the planet to be beamed
up by my own ships (the little difference can be easily explained by
ship-to-ship transfer and planet production).

Thanks to Slicer and all others that helped me out this "pirate nightmare",
now that I can understand what happened I can resume my playing with full
confidence! 😉

P.S. ... and obviously compliments to the anonymous Privateer commander...
