Failing GTX 970?

Hi everybody,

For the last day or two I have been having a problem that I believe is GPU related. Every time I play a game my screen goes black after the first minute or so saying "no signal detected". I can still hear the game in the background.

Temps on the GPU are roughly 40c idle and it usually crashes before reaching 65c when running Furmark.

I have done a fresh install of nvidia drivers and re-applied thermal paste to the GPU with no success. I tried my old card (GTX 460) and ran furmark for about 10 minutes and have seen no issues at all on that.

My specs are:
CPU: Intel I5 4670K (at stock speed and voltage)
Ram: 8gb Corsair vengeance (ran windows memory diagnostic and everything is fine)
GPU: Gainward Phantom GTX 970 (stock speed and voltage)
PSU: Corsair GS800 (800 watts)

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

I see, could you try a CPU load test? Prime 95 or intel burn test? Just want to rule out any other possibilities.

If no issues are seen with that, then yes, it likely is a faulty gpu (or possible PSU (I had similar symptoms for this) ??) . Is it still under warranty?

Hi, I need to do a hard reset. I also tried the windows+shift+ctrl+B shortcut to restart the graphics driver but that didnt work. (perhaps the shortcut doesnt work). I forgot to mention I am running windows 8.1.

Hi, I am using windows 8.1. I did a clean install of the nvidia driver and still no luck.

And in that case does it boot up straight away fine?

Perfectly fine. I can run the PC for hours on end with no issue. Its only once I put the GPU under any type of load (gaming or benchmarks) that the screen goes black.

Solution

I built myself a new pc keeping a few things including the GeForce 970. A few days later I tried my Mixed Reality Headset and it would go blank after 2 minutes. Couldn't get it working and gave up after a couple of days of trying and a lot of moaning on the HP Forums.

Went back to trying to play Ark, 2 minutes in black screens. A day later it had declined to black screen even when booting. I rebought Windows 10 (I only had OEM), wiped my SSD and Hardrive, reinstalled Win 10, mobo drivers and GeForce drivers etc.

It worked for two days and now I`m back to black screens if I try to boot using my GPU. If I boot with integrated, switch HDMI cable to GPU, I get a display. I cannot play games without quite a poor framerate from it either.

My motherboard is very new - Gigabyte Z370m D3H so maybe theres where the issues are? BIOS Nvidia problems?

I tried intel burn test for a few minutes and everything is fine. I ran Furmark on my old GTX 460 (according to nvidia the two cards have roughly the same TDP) so that rules out the PSU. I should also mention that there is noticeable coil whine on the card when you put it under load but it has been that way since I got it.

The card is out of warranty. Perhaps it is the GPU. If there is no physical fix that I can try then the best I can do with my PC for the next year is watch youtube and twitch videos ;(

Hmm. If there is a way to flash the bios I would be willing to try that. My card is 2 years old now and this is new.

Mine is 3 years old I think, never had so much as a hint of a problem until my new build.
