Failing hdd need advice

Toshiba satellite (boss's laptop), working fine, then all the sudden windows hangs at load screen for 3 hrs+. Boot to safe mode: desktop loads, but hangs on any action taken 1 hr+ (Click on start menu, etc.). Reboot to recover. No clicking or buzzing, assuming logic failure. The weird part: I figure, what the hey, I'll take it out of ahci mode and put it in IDE mode for giggs and see what I can come up with. Boots to safe mode immediately on first attempt with full (reduced driver set) functionality. Running chdsk now to hopefully repair errors, looks like it's finding some. What gives? Is this a trick I need to add to my repertoire? Or is the sata controller likely going bad? I thought a bad hdd was just a bad hdd. Lol. Thnx in advance for your help.

if it is an issue with the SATA controller, most likely an uninstall of the drivers and reinstall so fix it.

back up the important data from the hdd in case it's the hdd failing.
