Hello all and thanks for reading. My client has a 5 year old Acer Aspire laptop, and we are trying to copy the NVMe user directory and below to a new thumbdrive that he can use on his new laptop. Windows won't let me into the user directory on NVME, says I need permission- I go through like a 9 step process only to see the message that the device is write - protected. It's erratic; last night I was able to get the dialog box with a grid- the one that counts files to be copied and estimates the time - but it still ran into the WP error. Will a cloning program work? I have seen other forums with supposed solutions but they don't seem to work for most of the OP. TIA.

Yes...any account other than the actual user needs "permission".
Thats how it works.

Why can't the actual user copy that data to elsewhere?

And this speaks to not having a real backup situation.
You and the client should never get to this state.

Thanks to both of you. Backups yes absolutely and I will advise him- however this is first contact with the client so we didn't have a history with him.

Is there a way of finding out, short of bothering the customer, whether he has an online (not local) Microsoft account? There is nothing listed under Advanced Security for his username.

Also, since the client's laptop is having other problems as well, I have the NVMe mounted to a different computer - my laptop. Would the NT SE Backup privilege apply here? If I switch it on on my laptop, would it clear the write-protect and allow me to copy the files?
