Repeated attempts to apply the above security update have not worked. The
only message I get back is that the update failed. There is no error code
with this. We have a DSL/Router system here. I run Win XP and my wife's
laptop runs Windows 98 SE. My wife is real technophobe and isn't keen to run
an work on the internet until she knows why this is happening. All other
previous updates have been applied. I would appreciate any help if at all
possible. I know I don't have much information but then she is only getting
the above failure message. So if any one can help it would be greatly
appreciated. I will gladly provide more information if needed. Thanks in
advance. :).

To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes (e.g., other IE windows) closed before
installing anything, including Windows Updates.

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) or iuhist.xml for
errors associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive/windows_update_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

First, thanks everyone for the help. No joy so far but I have learned more
about the MS support system. I looked in the Windows Update log and got the
following error entry: Download finished/(Error 0x80070017: Data error
(cyclic redundancy check)). I checked the archives and the ERROR STRING is:
ERROR_CRC, the DEC ERROR CODE IS: 2147024873. I have tried turning off the
Norton Internet Security/Antivirus programs. As far as I can tell nothing
but the essentials are running. I did check and the WIN XP Update applies to
WIN 98 and 98SE. I checked the version installed and that shows as:
6.0.2800.1106, Chipher Strength: 128 bit, Product ID:
55736-817-8245781-004485, Update Versions: SP1, Q867282, Q827009, q313829,
Q890923, Q883939, Q903235, Q833989.

I am begining to wonder if this is actually important to the operation of
Internet Explorer. While I don't relish the idea maybe I should switch
browser for the time being. Again, I would appreciate any help on offer.

Thanks in advance

OT: You should get SP2 and all post-SP2 updates installed on the WinXP box
ASAP.

Try downloading 896727 via the Windows Catalog for a later, offline install
with everything but (Windows) Explorer closed (This includes going
offline/off network):

PA Bear, thanks for the reply. Now I am not sure if I have given you all the
information you needed to deal with this. My wife's laptop is running Win
98SE and the problem is with her computer not mine. My IE etc. seems to be
working okay (I have Win XP installed). We are sharing a router connection
to the internet. Otherwise I have nothing to with her computer unless
something goes wrong ;-). I wasn't aware that there were anyt service packs
for Win 98 SE. Does this make things a bit clearer? If I can't resolve this
I can always reload the system but I would prefer not to do that. Your
continued help is appreciated.

The above was directed to you and your WinXP box.

The above was in reference to the Win98SE box.
