Here's my system setup
i7 4770k, overclocked
2 x 7970s, overclocked
MSI Mpower mobo
2 x 8GB GSkill 2133
Seasonic X-1250
Other components using power: D5 Vario pump, 1 SSD, 2 Caviar Blacks, fan controller, 4 fans.
The problem I'm having is the Seasonic X-1250 seems to be overheating the past few days. I've been using the PSU pretty regularly (lots of gaming, benching, etc) since July when I bought it. Now, when I'm stressing my system in any way, like playing BF3, my PSU powers off after 20 - 40 minutes of playing, then after maybe 5-10 seconds, it kicks back on and my computer reboots.
When I felt the housing of the PSU, it was pretty hot to the touch -- not so hot that I had to immediately withdraw my hand, but hot enough that holding my fingers on it for more than a few seconds got quickly uncomfortable. I don't know how hot they are normally supposed to feel, though. I had the PSU bottom mounted, fan drawing air from the bottom. There were no obstructions blocking airflow.
I decided to run the PSU outside the case and monitor the fan activity. Turns out, the fan is not even spinning. No matter what amount of load I put on it, the fan doesn't turn. The PSU continues to overheat but doesn't seem to be shutting off as quickly outside the case (I need to test it for a longer amount of time). There is a hybrid switch on it. Doesn't matter whether it's on hybrid or normal, fan doesn't move the slightest.
This is my first Seasonic PSU, which I was told was the best. Disappointing.
Is it common for fans to fail? Shouldn't it be spinning up with that kind of load?
