My current build is:
Fx 8350
Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
HD 7950 crossfire
8 GB ram

So I can't play Fallout 4 on Max settings right now and when i check the recommended requirements, im only short in the cpu section. If I were to overclock the cpu to around 4.7, would I then be able to have it on Max settings and 60 fps?

recommended specs say a 290x for AMD based GPU. You only have a 7950.

Take a look at the comparison. Over a 1000 more shaders, twice the ROP.

Sorry, but your card isn't the same as the recommended GPU.

Unselected your answer and missed the crossfire part.

In theory, 2 is better than a 290x, but if the game isn't using the CF, then it's worse. You need to run some monitoring to watch GPU/CPU and see what is maxing out and bottlenecking you. If you're not hitting 100% CPU usage, then it's not your bottleneck and it's probably the crossfire.

And what do you mean you can't play it? Does it play at all? What FPS do you get? What about godrays. It can be a super demanding game with those turned up. And it's not a super optimized game to begin with. People with far better rigs have issues still.

Well no I can play it on ultra settings but AA and a couple of stuff have to be dropped so I can play at solid 60 fps and sometimes it drops to 40 fps for a sec which I think is due to loading. But I'm wondering about having AA and everything maxed out? Is that not possible unless you have some 3000$ rig?

Fallout is one of those games that doesn't seem to need a top of the line GPU since it's mostly a slow paced game. To give you an idea... I have a 280X and I'm able to play at Ultra Settings without any problems at all.

using a 290X & 4790K i have all options maxed at 1080p. sits right ~65fps the majority of the time. BUT, when i'm moving through buildings if i pass the 3rd floor it starts slowing down big time while looking out, to like 45fps. guessing it's just the draw distance and all the stuff going on out there.

and even running from SSD it has some long(what i would call long) load times sometimes.
