Fallout 4 screen tearing and vsync issues

I have been having some extreme screen tearing in fallout 4 when my game is running at 90-110 fps which is strange because I have a 144hz monitor. I tried to go into Nvidia control panel and turn on triple buffering and vsync but then that capped my game to 60fps instead of the 144fps that it should because it is a 144hz panel. Is there something that I need to do so that the Nvidia control panel understands that I have a 144hz panel? Also, why is my game have very extreme screen tearing at fps 30+ below its hertz?

Fallout 4 is capped at 60 normally. Having a 144hz panel means nothing, the game is coded like that. This also applies to other games like Skyrim and Dark Souls series because the game physics is dependent on FPS so it caps at 60.

How did you get it to unlock to begin with? Need to go reverse the changes and it should be fine after that. I know it sucks but that is just the way it is. I was shocked to find out after getting a 144hz monitor myself how many games are actually dependent on vsync or they cap at 60 fps.

when I launched the game first it would run above 60fps, and then I saw on a forum a way to unlock the fps which could also help with micro stuttering and I thought I might as well. here is the link if you want to uncap your game:

the problem really isnt mainly that it is at 60fps I want to get rid of the screen tearing, by using vsync at 144fps, are you saying that using vsync on certain bethesda games will only go to 60 and that I am stuck with either 60fps or lots of tearing?

Hi,

Note: I wouldn't recommend unlocking it above 60 based on what happend in skyrim when you did (the game became unstable).

It's quite possible what you're experiencing in Fallout4 above 60fps is instability which may result in a screen tearing look with screen play not meshing properly. As SinxarKnights explains it's a deliberate limitation of the game's engine and wouldn't be surprised if console/TV had an involvement in trying to make an advanced game run on a treadmill.

GTA 4's cut scenes had a similar effect on my 144Hz screen if fps were left uncapped since they were recorded in 30fps apparently, the characters would shudder quite badly being unbearable to watch. Capped at 60Fps was much an improvement but being a 144Hz monitor i couldn't use vsync i had to use Nvidia inspector to force it.

Give inspector a shot to force 60fps rather than rely on vsync. (If have Nvidia card) For AMD, not sure what is there for them, there's Radeonmod but not sure if its compatible with the latest offerings though.

Because the only way not to have screen tearing is to exactly match the fps with the refresh.
Tearing is sending an incomplete image to the display,if you get lower then the displays fps then the card draws less then one frame per refresh=incomplete if you get higher then refresh FPS the card draws more then one frame per refresh=also incomplete.

then why is the game stable (no tearing) at 60fps

I can get the game to cap at 60fps using nvidia control panel, but I was just wondering if there was a way to increase the cap to 90 fps so that I would have a higher fps and no screen tearing.

i'm having trouble with fallout 4 stutters... but wouldn't disabling vsync and running the game at a higher refresh make everything in the game run too fast? i had terrible tearing without vsync, and the menu selection was in fast forward. i'm worried about screwing up how the time in the game functions.
