Hello
I have seen alot of questions/answers about the technical difference etc.
But what is best?
My motherboard Asus x99-a support both.
From motherboard manual:
"4x4pin chassis Fan connectors for both 3-pin (DC Mode) and 4-pin (PWM Mode)"

Solution
The 3 pin connector the motherboard can only control the fan speed rotation indirectly by varying the voltage to the fan. The 4th pin allows the motherboard to directly control the speed of the fan. In practice, it doesn't really make much difference, both can be used to vary the speed of the fan in response to temperatures.
