I am building a desk with computer built into it.I am not a computer geek and don't know much. I plan on using the Asus sabertooth z87 mobo and I know it has the thermal radar fan controller built into it and I'm wonder the pro's and con's of using an external fan controller. The only reason for using an external is for the coolness factor. Are there any good reasons to use an external controller vs one built into the sabertooth?

Thanks!

Solution
depends on what you mean by external fan controller.

do you mean a rheobus based controller (physical knobs you turn) or do you mean a digital controller (with a lcd screen and buttons or touch screen) ?

a rheobus allows you to manually control the temps by hand. turn the knob up the fans speed up. turn it down the fans slow down. if you have your fans going to slow your temps will rise though so you need a good handle on when you need to turn them up. the plus side is that they can handle higher power fans (like deltas).

a digital controller that comes with a temp probe can be adjusted to automatically regulate fan speed based on temperature just like the motherboard does. plus it looks neat and can display semi-accurate temperature...

Thanks. Yeah I'm talking digital controller. It has automatic mode and manual if you to adjust fan speeds yourself. This model specifically:

not digital ones... as i've never used them because they are too gaudy for my tastes and they throw too much light. the rheobus type lamptron fc2 can handle some pretty hefty fans though and is the one i use currently (it can handle deltas).

i would read some reviews to see what people say works well and what people say has broken or is buggy.
