I was wanting to upgrade the fan on an old computer for use as a server as it was making a lot of noise. I was thinking of using Bitspower Silent Storm 120mm. But I'm afraid that there might not be enough space. Does anyone have any experience of this fan and how much space I would need inside the case? The PC has an ASUS a7a266 mobo. An image of the motherboard can be found at: http://www.firingsquad.com/media/article_image.asp?fs_article_id=847&pic_id=1

Thanks.

Fan for the CPU HSF? If yes, then what HSF are you using and what size is the fan? Does the current HSF have the mounting brackets for a 120MM fan? If not, then you might be able to find one for it or get a new HSF for the system.

Well the bitspower silent storm has a a heatsink built into it. Unfortunately I can't find a lot of information on this it. I was looking for a quiet fan for a socket A moetherboard. The HSF that I'm using at the moment came with the PC and is a standard heatsink fan with a minature fan on the top. The bitspower fan is very large so putting on top of the existing heatsink wouldn't be an option especially as it already has a heatsink. I take it you've never seen or used one of these fans before? A picture of it can be found at:

Aha! I thought you were just looking for a replacement fan - not a HSF combo. That Bits looks similar to a Zalman CNPS 7700Cu or 7000A-Cu. They perform pretty well and are quiet.

Another option you might consider is the Thermalright SI-97A with a Panaflo 92mm medium output fan. I've got that setup in my current rig. It GREATLY reduced the noise in my system and dropped temps over 5 degrees C. If you want QUIET, then you could also look at something like this. Before my SI-97 I had one of those small POS HSFs and hated it. The SI-97A was a great buy for me.

The one you've recommended looks very good, but from what I can see it's not compatiable with a Socket A motherboard. Alas I think I'll just to have to risk it and get the bitspower. I have the Zalman and have been very happy with it. Thanks for your help.

The Thermalright site says that it is compatible with Socket A.

Some HSFs will have clearance issues on some motherboards, you're right.

If you're unsure, but willing to go with a slightly smaller HSF, I can heartily recommend the ThermalRight SI-97. Works very well (used to have one), and it's design means it won't suffer any fitment problems on virtually any socket A motherboard.

Only potential problem is it's fitting method is the standard springy clip, so it's not suitable for a PC that'll be moved around a lot.

Agreed with the spring clip. The only other issue that I have is it can be very close quarters for install in smaller cases. It may just be that I have mondo gorilla-hands, but I had to work hard to get the clip on...
