Kind of a newbie reality check question here....

When I see Athlon XP 1700 retail boxes for sale, it says it comes with a heatsink/fan but not what it is. So what does AMD bundle with the CPU ( Or or these being added by a reseller)

My basic question is will that be adequate for my needs, or should I be looking for an OEM XP 1700 and buy a separate HSF.

I do not plan to overclock.

I will be using an Antec mid tower case with 400 W PS and 2 back fans. DVD, CD-RW,Soundblaster front bay, and 3 hard drives. Would like to do some video editing and changing of MPEG formats. I live in San Francisco.. Not too hot.

Noise is a consideration for me though.

Is the retail box good enough?

Kevin

Yes!! If it wasn't enough, AMD wouldn't be shipping it with the Athlon XP because it's under warranty. Next time, please look back at previous posts before asking because these questions have been asked and answered hundreds of times.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

Thanks For answering me. Sorry I had not checked far back enough to see if there were previous threads on this.
I have gone back to read the relevant posts for the past 2 months. General agreement that cooling would be adequate without overclocking. No mention of noise level. One person thought the HSF for the retail box was made by Coolermaster.
I checked the AMD site and looked up coolermasters approved for the 1700xp. There were three. The minimum rated one for the 1700 was Coolermaster DP5-6131-A-A1. Rated at 38 db(A).If I remember the audibility levels correctly that woulf be fairly noticable, but not too much of a screamer.

I did email AMD from their web site asking for the make and model so I could see the specs. If they reply, I will post the answer. (Though I imagine that they may switch suppliers frequently and thats why they don't say who it is)

Thanks again

Kevin

In Athlon terms, 38dB is silent. Very hard to beat that sort of noice for a latest generation processor without going to watercoolers.

Yeah, that would be reasonable if that is the actual HSF that is bundled. I was just taking a guess based on someone elses comment that it might be a cooler master and then I checked their web site.
I might call one of the on line stores that sells them and see if they can open the box. But if they are not labeled, guess I just gotta try buying the retail and seeing if I like it ok. Guess I can just take it off and put on a better third party HSF if I am not satisfied.

Thanks
