I wan to know if my MOBO is capable of running a Y splitter for 3 pin case fans. I plan to use the fans in this case.DIYPC Ranger-R8-G ATX Mid Tower Case.
My mobo is a Dell 0r849j. It is very old. Im in the mixed of upgrading and plan on getting case first. But I want to utilize the fans in the case to cool it.
If there is any other options out there to use those fans with my mobo that'd be great to know. Thanks

Solution
As long as you don't do more than 2 fans per header, it is fine. Most fan headers are safe up to 1 amp. Most fans are under 0.5 amp. In fact, most are ~0.25 amp or so. I use fan splitters quite a bit.

Ok good, I don't want to fry my mobo xD. Sucks mine only has 1 case fan and 1 cpu fan headers. But ill get a splitter or tap into the wires and use the side and back fan.

I also want to know how to take my PSU from an old computer. And use it to run Case fans off of. The PSU is a RAIDMAX RX-380K 380W ATX12V Power Supply. And I just want to jump the wires from the PSU to the fan wires.

Which Wire sends the RPM?

It's always the 3rd pin for both 3 wire fans and 4 wire fans both.
Don't go by color, always go by position on the header or connector.

Why on earth would you want to do that?

I want to just to have extra cooling when I'm at home or running older PCs to keep them cooler. More or less to just have fans ran off of external power. And because I have an extra PSU that I don't care for 😛.
