I wish to be able to control (via Speedfan) or at least have my system recognise that I have two case fans. However, their power comes direct from the psu ans they do not have the right pin head to attach to my motherboard. Is there an adaptor to convert them to the small size (for the motherboard) or would a fan control bay have the sockets at the back to take the fans in?

All the fan controllers I've seen use 3-pin fans. If you'd simply like to slow your fans down, you can rewire them for 7v by using the 5v line rather than a ground for the fan's negative lead.

4-pin fans connect to power supply
3-pin fans connect to motherboard or fan controller

The 4-pin fans use 2 wires. The 3-pin fans use 3 wires, where the third is the fan speed (RPM) signal.

its definately he one with four wires. is there any way of getting the system to recognise them? they just go into the psu right now

I think you need a couple of new fans with the correct wiring and plug for the motherboard...or...you can get a fan controller like a Sunbeam or something, but this won't reveal speed through your software or motherboard.

No. First of all, such fans use 2 wires. You see 4 wires on the passthrough connector, but only 2 wires go to the fan itself. The third wire, for detecting speed, is not present.

Some fans with 2 wires are actually built the same as ones that have 3, so you could solder a wire onto that point if you knew where, simply by lifting the lable, but when you get to that point you might as well just buy different fans.
