Im having problems with far cry 4 with 5.1 audio. If I use my mobo (Z97 pro wifi ac) audio which is 5.1 connected to a 5.1 surround sound I get no sound after the intro. But if I switch my default audio to my gpu (r9 290x) I get sound. But using the gpu I can only get the sound to my tv speakers. Is there any fix/patch for this or am I stuck with 2 channel audio

Solution
I think either windows or your sound card's control panel (or both) have the GPU HDMI out as the default playing device.

Try looking into your tray icons for Windows' own control panel and for your audio card's one; if you see something like "AMD HDMI out" change it to the right device and make sure it stays so.
For Windows' own control panel, you can right click on the device and select it as primary/default, but for the other one you might have to look on your own, as they tend to change depending on the manufacturer's choices.

When you're done, reboot the PC and, if you did things right and that was actually the issue, you'll hear your 5.1 sound.

I might not have worded that very well. If I use mobo as default audio device I get no sound so I switch the default audio device to my gpu and I get sound. Meaning I cant get 5.1 as the only sound device I can use for 5.1 is my mobo. This is only with far cry 4 everything else works fine with my mobo sound

Aside from "Ubi-vidia" and their half-working games, it shouldn't be like that anyway.
Just the fact the issue is there only with Far Cry 4 makes you think about the game being the one to blame, but you never know until you try fixing things and it never hurts checking twice 😛

From what I've understood, you're trying to go through the 5.1 analog audio jacks, right? (e.g. Frag Maniac's using the digital S/PDIF out, from the looks of the screenshot).
If not, follow the advice given by Frag Maniac and make sure of that.

I responded the way I did because the OP had just said "Seems to be mobo 5.1 to a receiver through optical", when he implied the game was at fault, making it look that he as well was using optical out to an AVR.

And for the record OP, MB 5.1 is an incorrect term. All MB audio does is send a stereo PCM signal to your AVR in the case of optical out. It may or may not be encoded with a 5.1 signal depending on your MB.

My older MB does not encode 5.1, so I have to rely on my AVR's DPLII. A lot of MBs now though have Realtek ALC 1150, which can encode 5.1 via DTS and Dolby. For this reason my next MB will definitely have ALC 1150.

It is definitely a game issue. I have been using true 5.1 dts through optical for years now. Say something is in my rear left in game in hear them in my rear left speaker ect. But far cry 4 I have no sound what so ever after the intro screens, ubisoft logo ect. So I change my default audio to gpu and that send the sound to my tv through hdmi, which is 2 channel only. I have changed my mobo audio to 24bit 48000hz 2 channel and it worked. So its obviously a game issue with 5.1

I understand what your saying but different set ups get different issues. 5.1 works with every other game I own and videos. Its just this. Some people were experiencing black screens or game not saving with far cry 4. I never had any of them issues but it doesn't mean they dony exist on another system. I was asking for a fix if anyone has came across this issue and solved it. Im sure it does work on some system but mine it doesn't

^Then what you're really saying is it's an anomaly related to this game for your particular scenario, not "the game" in general. If you don't make that distinction, it can be misleading.

Have you tried discussing this on the official forum to see if anyone's come up with a better workaround, or if Ubi can possibly figure out some possible compat issues?
