Far Cry Primal sudden low FPS

I've looked everywhere and have not found a solution to my problem... Maybe someone can help me here.

I just built a new PC (specs below) and it has been running wonderfully for a week. Today I set up and ran HTC Vive VR for a bit, then went to play Far Cry Primal to find that I'm only getting about 10 FPS all of a sudden, even on low settings. It has been running smoothly on ultra settings until this point.

I have tried everything from changing the GamerProfile.xml values recommended by a lot of other posts, fiddled around with nvidia settings, etc. I have tried restarting the PC as well as reinstalling the game. The only thing that I've done between the last smooth gameplay and the low FPS gameplay was to set up and play the VR, which I've disconnected and made sure was not running anything in the background. Other games like The Witcher 3 and ARK: Survival Evolved are all running smoothly on highest settings.

My CPU runs at about 30+ degrees celsius while Far Cry Primal is running and GPU at about 50+.

Mobo: Asus Maximus IX Hero Z270
CPU: i7-7700K
Cooler: Corsair H60 water cooler
GFX: EVGA 1080 8GB
PSU: 850 Watts
RAM: 16GB

Please let me know if any other information is needed to pinpoint the problem. Thanks!!

Solution
I have no clear answer for you, but if you want to fiddle around a bit.

1. go into nvidia control panel > manage 3d settings > Program settings tab > Farcry Primal > Restore (to default). could fiddle with the settings otherwise, i.e. power: prefer maximum performance

2. Run DDU and reinstall your graphics driver completely (admittedly this is probably overkill)
If it only does it with Far Cry Primal then see if re-installing it fixes it, I can't think what else would cause it since you definitely aren't thermal throttling. I'd imagine that while playing it both CPU and GPU usage are pretty low? (I use MSI afterburner to monitor it on my second monitor).

It works now! ....somehow. Shoe59, I have tried your first suggestion prior to posting the problem and it did not work. But I just did a clean reinstall of the graphics driver as a last resort and now it works! Not quite sure how it went wonky in the first place, as ONLY this one game was affected... but at least it's fixed now! Thanks! 🙂
