I was looking in the setup options of my parents Dell Dimension 8100, and I came across a setting called "Fast Boot". This was an option that could be enabled or disabled and I am wondering what this is, how it works, and should I turn it on?

On my Dell, I have an equivalent setting (I think) called Quiet Boot. When enabled, it displays a Dell bootup screen instead of the BIOS bootup. I think it's the same thing on your Dimmension. I haven't noticed any change in boot speed, nor does it change any other settings or change system performance. It's safe to turn it on.

The setting is in the BIOS, right?

Fast boot speeds up the ram check when you first turn on the pc. Its safe to turn it on as the ram check doesnt pick up anything except for a missing stick of ram.

I had a Dell 8200 a couple of years ago. I no longer have it & my reply is based on memory. :)

The fast boot option bypasses certain portions of the POST (Power On Self Test) during the boot process. It can be safely turned on to speed the boot process somewhat. I did notice the difference in the cold boot startup times. In the future, if your system starts to give you problems, you can turn this option off to provide more intensive testing at start up to help identify the problem.

If the 8100 BIOS is much the same as the 8300, which I'm reasonably sure it is, then this is correct. Just turn it on, off again if there's reason to believe a hardware fault is occuring.
