I'm looking for a very fast external flash drive that's self-encrypting. Good idea or bad, I'm thinking of running my workspace on it and simply carrying the whole workspace home with me from work. Advantage: I've got everything that's not checked into the repository with me.
Disadvantages: The internal PC drive is fast and excellent with tons of small random IO, such as large software builds. I'd need an external disk that can keep up.
Because the software is, as always, company confidential, I can't just keep it on a vanilla USB 3.0 drive.
I'm leaning towards the Samsung T3. I've heard that Ironkey makes excellent devices, but they cost two to three times as much.
Is there anyone have experience with any of these drives and can give me advice from real-world experience? Or is the whole idea of having your primary workspace on an external drive stupid?
