I have a laptop which internal hard disk is slow. The copy speed is around 20 mb/s. I want to replace it with a high speed hard disk.
Please suggest me how can i increase my hard disk speed or I just buy a new one.

And one more thing I tried the ssd but my system not supporting it. So i have to go with hard disk.

Thanks........

what make/model laptop do you have now?

If hdd is a 5400rpm model you could upgrade it to a 7200rpm model. There used to be 10k rpm drives but I doubt they made any longer since ssd just make them obsolete when it comes to speed, Just remembered they didn't fit in laptops so 7200 best you can get.

you can't increase the speeds without getting another drive

i found this where drive was restricted to 20 mb/s by encryption on drive: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1754356/hdd-speed-limited-lenovo-t60.html

What are you copying? The 100-150 MB/s of modern HDDs is only possible with sequential files. With smaller files like Word documents and config files, speeds can drop to below 1 MB/s. So if your copy includes a lot of these small files, it could drop the overall copy speed to around 20 MB/s. File fragmentation will do the same thing - it splits up sequential files into lots of small pieces so the overall read speed can drop to 1 MB/s.

What do you mean by your system not supporting SSDs? They're interchangeable with 2.5" SATA HDDs. Is your laptop so old that the HDD is an IDE drive? That would certainly explain the 20 MB/s speed. If your HDD is IDE, then you probably won't be able to do better than about 60 MB with a used 2.5" IDE drive (30 MB/s if the laptop's IDE interface is ATA 33). There are IDE to SATA (or mSATA) adapters, but speed would be limited to the IDE interface's speed, and I haven't had much luck with IDE to SATA adapters. You'd be much better off upgrading to a newer laptop.

Yeah my laptop is too old. I tried inserting ssd drives but the laptop keep hanging. But the hdd port is a sata port thats why I want to upgrade it to a better one

My model is Dell Inspiron 3521. I think my hdd is 5400 rpm model. If change it to a 7200 model how much speed I shall get. And please share some links to buy a 7200 rpm hdd.

Yeah thats why I want a new hdd. The speed is too much slow. My work is hampering. Can give me some suggestions on high speed laptop hdd.

How much speed I get from that 7200 drive. And please share a best buy link.
Thanks........

Assuming your 5400 is healthy, increasing to 7200 gain is marginal. How's your ram? if you are running out of ram all the time, that's typically a common cause for slow down. How do you know? your HD LED blinks furiously ALL THE TIME. Machines with sufficient ram, LED blinks once in a while.

Wanting one because it is too slow, and wanting one because it is failing are two different things. In the first case a 'better' HDD will help, maybe am SSHD, or an SSD, in the latter a simple like for like replacement will give you want you want.

In the former case timing is irrelevant, in the later it is vital to do it as soon as possible and stop using it until the new one has arrived.

So 'Yeah that's why I want a new one because it is too slow' is indicating that you haven't got the point.

I have 8 gb ddr3 ram. Ram is working fine

Actually dell support centre told me to change the hdd. I really don't know what is the main problem. They told me that hdd is too old and purchase a new one for better performence. And thats why I am here to confirm my hdd's original problem.
