Fast internet but download speed is slow

my xfinity modem's speed is 50 mbps. my laptop's download speed is fast. But my computer's download speed is really slow . my computer is new and fast. except for the internet.

So, did you have this problem before? how to solve it?

my hard drive is 1 TB and i only used 250 GB

Motherboard LAN driver installed on the desktop?
Damaged internet cable.
Make sure its plugged properly (so the signal is strong).

Is it just the downloading thats slow, or browsing etc too?

Are you using wired ethernet or wireless?

on some motherboards with intel ethernet chipset the intel software pacage was the issue with some internet being slow. to find out boot into f8 safe mode or in windows start up turn off every intel software and see if the speed goes better. if it not intel chipset make sure your wifi or router not open and you have leachers. run malware scan see if you have spyware on your rig.

I'm using wireless . just the downloading is slow . I don't have viruses or spyware

Okey, are we talking downloads using a software (Torrents etc), web-browser downloads, or everything?

It could be your USB adapter if you're using one. Also, are you using any tests to determine your speed? Such as speedtest.net? If not, go and do that and post the results.

yeah I'm using medialink wireless USB adapter. I'm going to change it.

download speed: 5.40 mbps
upload speed: 0.61 mbps

5.4 isn't too bad. If you have an ethernet cable try using it first to see if your USB is the issue.
