I will start with the fact, that I never looked into NAS until a few days ago. Company I work for (small size Video & 3D studio) have Netgear NV+ NSA (4TB) - it is slooow. We need to get a new NAS and for that we have £700-£1500, with an option to go higher if necessary (as long as we can justify it).

At the moment NAS is connected to router by Ethernet cable and from router anyone can connect to it witlessly or by wire (which I think is a typical set-up)

We need something that is easy to set up and fast. My first tough was this Netgear 316.

I also read good reviews about this QNAP TS-469. I am not sure how hard would it to be to set it up.

I'm not sure what RAID settings would be better for us. We need back up of all files, so RAID 1 or 10 seams as a good option?

How hard is it to set up NAS for a typical PC user?

Minimum storage would be 6GB + a backup. This gives a 12GB device.
Ideally we would like to use storage to edit from it (5 of us). W copy large numbers of small files (single images) as well as large files.

What are you thoughts about this situation? Is there anything you could recommend (NAS model, or particular solution).

Thank you for reading

You're confused on the backup. RAID is not a backup. It is a way to overcome a hardware failure. You need to actually do a backup somewhere else(other than the NAS) preferably keeping a copy off-site. If you have a fire in the office that destroys the NAS, then how do you recover?

Sorry if I misused word "backup". What I meant is that we need raid that create copy of all files on NAS in case one of the hard drive would fail inside of NAS (like RAID 10 do, as far as I am aware). So if we need 6GB storage, we actual need 12GB device to be safe.

We do backup our files to external drives on frequent base in case of emergency :)

Thank you for your input ss202sl :)

Just to give more details:

We use both iOS and Windows in studio, so NSA need to co-op with both without a problem. I guess it is standard now. but I preferred to specify it.

All input will be appreciated as we are in blank spot at the moment 🙁

We bought NetGear RN31400 8TB. It works fine for us for almost a year now. Used it to work on wide range of large files without problem. However it can be extremely noisy when reading and writing, which can be disturbing. Speed-wise it is fine, not great, bad not bad either.
