Looking for a real fast HDD or SHDD because the cost is a factor.

Here are the contenders.....

1- FireCuda 1TB - ST1000LX015
Latest hybrid hdd from Seagate. 5400 rpm. 8GB Nand Flash (MLC). 128MB regular cache.
Checking it from http://hdd.userbenchmark.com/ as well as https://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/ and it scores the worst. These specs and then the worst test results are surprising.

2- WD Black 1TB - wd10jplx
32MB Cache and 7200rpm. Latest performance drive from Western Digital.
Checking it from http://hdd.userbenchmark.com/ as well as https://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/ and it scores the best. I never really liked WD drives. It was unexpected to see this one has the best score.

3- Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB - ST750LX003
A very old hybrid drive. 7200 rpm. 8GB Nand (SLC) and 32MB regular cache.
This comes 2nd on both website tests with un-impressive numbers. I was expecting this to out-perform the other two. It just barely gets a better score then the 3rd place.

I don't know how reliable are these test results on the mentioned websites but I am very much surprised. I was expecting the Momentus XT to be the best. I know it's a very old drive. However, it's the only one that is 7200 rpm as well as an hybrid drive. It was a big mistake that Seagate stopped featuring those drives.

I have talked with Seagate about this in the past and each time I have been told that stopped offering new versions, revisions of this Momentus because they said they are able to offer better performance without making them 7200 rpm. Obviously, that is not the correct.

If I go with the test results, then WD Black is the way too go.

I would appreciate some feedback.

Thanks...

You could stick with a samsung evo 850 which is a solid solution, if you're only doing emails or gaming. If you plan on processing lots of movies or lots of games then a faster WD blue drive with 1tb of storage (try and aim for 2.5 inch format to fit inside a laptop).

Maybe have a 1tb external drive?
On some laptops you can remove the CD drive and have a second one in there (ssd and then a large hdd for movies etc)

When I asked for feedback, I was mostly asking feedback about the drives I mentioned. I guess I will go with the WD Black.

This is for a general use laptop, needs something larger than 500GB and needs to cost below $100.

That being said; I have been using Samsung 840 Evo for more than 3 years now and I am extremely happy with it since day one. My next upgrade will be 960 Evo, not the 850. I am just waiting to put my budget in order.

I am using SSDs for a very long time. Before that I was using 7200 rpm drives. I installed many SSHDs on client, family and friend laptops but I never had a chance to use one myself.

Looking at these test results; even though the SSHD technology is matured by now, still the 7200 rpm drives brings more performance on the table.
