What is the difference between FPS and Refresh Rate? My video card runs at about 100FPS while my monitor can only run at 85hz...

My Rig:
AthlonXP 2000+ 1.677ghz
GeForce Verto FX5200 128mb DDR
Maxtor 7200RPM 80GB, Stock 40gb
Kingston 384MB DDR
Cendyne 52x24x52 CD-RW
Lite-On 4x DVD-RW

FPS is how many times the card redrwas the scene per second..ie how many images will be displayed per second. Refresh rate is essentially how many times the pixels are refreshed per second. Essentially what happens is u have a matrix of phosphors and an electron beam for r g and b shoots the phosphors where the kinetic energy from the electron gets transferred into heat energy and it glows a certain amount. There are 3 of these RGB phosphors per pixel. The gun scans left to right, going to the next line. Once it does all the lines, it starts over b/c it needs to update the image and the phosphors lose their glow. @ 85Hz, it goes thru all the lines 85 times/ second.
So that's refresh rate. 85Hz is fine in terms of FPS since te human eye generally can't tell above 60-70fps anyway. If the 85Hz doesn't bother ur eyes, keep it.

FPS is the most common "GEEK" way of determining how fast your computer runs on games. WHile refresh rate is on the hardware itself and can't be changes unless you buy a new monitor
