Question Fatal Direct x error

GPU: EVGA GTX 980

CPU: INTEL i5 3570k

So the past year my games have been crashing for some reason and I've looked all over the internet for a solution but have found nothing. I even played Risk of Rain 2 and it crashes within a minute of starting a level. When I play FFXIV it tells me it was a Fatal Direct X error when it crashes.

However I've learned that if I downclock my gpu by about 170 mHz the problem stops and all my games run normally.

Anyone know what the problem might be? I can't help but feel it started happening more frequently some time after I replaced my HDD with an SSD. I just want to be ready for Cyberpunk 2077
