(Faulty) MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8GB

I recently received a MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8GB and noticed that it didn't have a backplate and was missing the 6 pin power connector slot which sits beside the 8 pin. Can someone clarify that this is indeed a faulty card so that I can return it?

I'm pretty sure the Aero card is the only one that runs off of only an 8-pin. Are you sure that they didn't ship you a 1070 or something? I find it hard to believe they'd make the mistake of putting the Gaming X cooler on a reference PCB.

Well the box it came in clearly stated MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8gb on it. Couldn't see anything else to lead me to believe it was a different card. There was no clear indication of what the card was on the card itself. The msi 1070 comes with 8 pin and 6 pin connector slots as well.

Another thing, when trying to register the card on the MSI website it was missing the second serial number which is found on the card itself.

I recently received my MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X 8gb, from Amazon. And upon first inspection it I found that it came without a backplate and I thought that was odd because I had researched the card quite thoroughly before purchasing. To my knowledge the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X comes with one 8 pin power connector slot and one 6 pin power connector slot. I noticed that my card was missing the 6 pin slot which sits to the left of the 8 pin slot. Can anyone clarify that this is a faulty card and needs returning?

You shuold return it and show the pictures in the RMA request. It could be the 1060 version, that one has only 1x 8pin.

I think your card is a fake (not by you). It has several issues I can see, no back plate, a single sli connector (so no HB-SLI connector which is standard for GTX 1080s) and it should have an 8 pin and 6 pin.

I would return it immediately. My guess is it is a GTX 960 that has been repackaged and bunk firmware to make it appear like a gtx 1080 in say GPU-z but you would have to hook it up to be sure. Which I wouldn't do as it may damage your system. Amazon is known for counterfeits and unfortunately i think you have been had.

nah its not even that. A GTX 1060 would not have an SLI connector at all. it's an outright counterfeit as far as I can tell or repackaged GTX 960.

I shouldn't have a problem returning it so long as I follow the Returns and Replacements set by Amazon? And if i ask for a replacement what are the chances of it being a real GTX 1080? Thanks for the quick responses.

You shouldn't have trouble with amazon. It's clearly not the product you ordered. File a claim online immediately cause even then it will take a few days for them to clear things up. I think as far as a replacement goes make sure the vendor is amazon and not a third party otherwise you risk the same thing happening again.

Yeah filing now. Going to head to the local post office today and send it back. Such an unfortunate thing to happen, but hopefully can get it all cleared up and be ready with a new "real" 1080 in no time. Super excited.
