Faulty power supply? Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W

Recently purchased a second hand PC with an included PSU (Thermaltake Toughpower XT 775W). After putting in my HDD (freshly removed from a working computer) and connecting the SATA data and power cables, I powered on the system. Neither the connected HDD or Optical Drive (also using sata power) were recognised by the BIOS. I decided to make sure the HDD is still working by putting it into my old system. It no longer spins up. The optical drive does not work either.

Attempting to find out more, I connected another working optical drive to the thermaltake PSU using SATA power cable, and I found that after only a few seconds one of the chips on the optical drive PCB was getting EXTREMELY hot (hot enough to burn skin through the optical drive casing). I removed it quickly to avoid damage. To make sure that lightning was indeed going to strike twice, I then put another old but working HDD into the new system, and that one was seemingly immediately damaged by the thermaltake PSU and no longer spins up in any PC. There was no smoke and no sound. Just working before being plugged in, dead the second after.

Am I doing something wrong or is it just a faulty PSU?

It's not a very good PSU to begin with , probably faulty.

Solved the problem. I was sent the wrong power cables with the PSU. Turns out the ones I was sent are for a Corsair PSU. It delivered 5V where there should have been 12 and 12 where there should have been 5. Therefore a fried HDD.
