Wasn't sure where to put this but hopefully someone can explain this crap to me in a way that makes sense. FB added end-to-end ecryption to messenger. From the browser, my settings show it's turned off and nothing has appeared differently. But on my phone, the messenger app forced me to create a PIN to continue seeing my existing messages. Messages stating that if I don't then I could lose messages stored on the phone. Firstly, I 've had the encryption turned off so there shouldn't be any message storage on my device in the first place, hence why I can view my stuff from any browser I log in from. So that's my first bit of confusion. Secondly, since creating the PIN on my mobile the chat windows from my browsers state it's upgraded the security of this chat and messages are missing and I need to sync them. But new and old messages stay synced between mobile and browser, I see nothing missing. So I guess my question is, what exactly has FB done to messenger? Is everything now stored on my devices and being synced? Cause frankly, I don't really need gigs of encrypted message history on my phone.

Publication about it here: https://messengernews.fb.com/2023/12/06/launching-default-end-to-end-encryption-on-messenger/

About sync, that should work as long as you've enabled it.

But messages are stored on the FB account (cloud), rather than on the device itself. Since when you send message e.g from phone, you can view it from PC and vice-versa.
